The smiles, laughs and pure happiness are something I will treasure for the rest of my life.
It was my 11th trip to Honduras, and visiting with the children at the Oasis de Amor orphanage near Choluteca, but I continue to be struck each time I visit with how much pure joy and happiness emanates from the approximately 30 children who live at the orphanage.
On this visit in particular, I was even more struck than normal with just how happy the children are. Yet at the same time, many of them have experienced things in their lives that a lot of us cannot even imagine.
For most, they have been abandoned by their parents. Yet these children have so much love and happiness to share.
I will forever cherish the memories of spending the better portion of a day on my recent visit to Oasis simply kicking a soccer ball around with the children.
On the final day of my recent visit, the children’s big surprise arrived. They were treated to new outdoor play equipment.
The equipment was purchased thanks to the generosity of Father’s Hope donors and I am forever grateful and thankful to everyone who contributed to this effort to make the purchase possible.
Darkness was approaching until I was able to visit Oasis de Amor on the day in which the equipment was delivered, yet the children were outside well into the darkness playing on their new equipment.
The equipment may very well be worn out very quickly because they were playing on it so hard, but these children don’t mind.
While they have newer soccer goals at their complex to play soccer with, they were just as happy using their old swing set as the goal posts. I’m sure the same is true with their outdoor play equipment.
The children truly realize they don’t need the newest “stuff” to be happy. That is one of many lessons the children have to teach that many of us can learn from.
In addition to being happy, the children are also incredibly polite. I lost track of how many times they thanked me for visiting, and for the new play equipment.
I will always treasure the final memory I have of my most recent visit to Oasis. As darkness enveloped the complex, children continued to play on their new outdoor equipment. At the same time, I stood near the equipment, singing and clapping with several of the children who were filled with pure joy and happiness.
Thank you to everyone supporting our mission in any way. The children at Oasis were thankful and blessed by your recent generosity. You helped them to feel special, and that is important for children who have so much love of their own to share.
